On the list of things I did NOT think I’d do today when I went to work: Telling a wife and mother of 4 that her husband and father of her children (all under 18) went from “eating breakfast” to “no longer with us” in a matter of 90 minutes. Today is one of those days where I need a post-work hug.

gspot asked: Dear Doc A,

I just got an interview for med school! It's unreal because for so many years now it's been a 'dream'...now that I'm so close to this *seemingly lifelong goal of mine...I am starting reparation for the interview (it is in MMI style..) which is in one month. I really look up to you, love your blog, and am inspired to see such an awesome person and...

butrightnowitsraining asked: What kind of medicine do you (or are you hoping to) practice? Medical school is a (scary) dream of mine, so it's really cool to see someone on Tumblr who has come out alright on the other end!

Worth it: Aveda Lip Saver - The price makes me more vigilant about keeping track of it, and I don’t open more than 2 tubes at a time (one for work, one for everywhere else) My pens! The Dr. Grip Center of Gravity. Writes like a dream, refills are cheap.  My only beef with it is that it doesn’t hold up to heavy use very well.  I buy mine at Target.  In purple, thankyouverymuch. My...

Dear Banana Republic;
When will you ever learn that if you insist on slashing the price of an item I purchased the day after I buy it, and subsequently refuse to give me a price adjustment because I used a discount code I will simply rebuy it, along with a few other items to meet the $50 minimum for free shipping (and another discount code, because you ALWAYS have them) and return the higher priced item and the items I...

Little-known fact about me
During the winter I use lip balm every 2-3 hours.  The presence of lip balm in my white coat pocket (with a fresh coat on my lips) is enough to turn a rough shift into an acceptable shift. When I was on trauma, I liked to travel light.  In my 3 white coat pockets I carried 4 things: my list of patients, my favorite pen, my iPhone, and my Aveda Lip Saver.  Acceptable variations: Kiehl’s lip...

Marathon!
I don’t know if I’ve mentioned it here, but since it’s getting closer to being real (translation: since there’s about to be some $$ involved) I figure it’s time to lay it out there. Against my better judgment and with complete disregard to the demands in my life, I’ve decided to run the Chicago Marathon in 2011.  I will be doing so with an amazing friend along...

4th of 5 night shifts in a row, done! There is light at the end of the tunnel.  Unfortunately, that light is a train that is a shift tonight in an area of the emergency room affectionately known as “Major Mess.” Fun.  (But it kinda is…I thrive on creating order out of chaos.  Except in my apartment.)

I win!
I’m working tonight, so I got up early in order to nap strategically before my night shift.  This morning I: Washed/dried my sheets and remade my bed Made slow cooker baked potato soup Ran to the post office Made a bunch of necessary phone calls Therefore, I win at life! Bonus points: I have the ingredients for slow cooker butternut squash soup ready to go in my fridge when I finish...

Yay!
The ex-boyfriend/Navy SEAL and I got to video chat for a good hour today.  It was good to catch up and it was good to see his mug and know that he really IS okay, despite being halfway across the world and doing some pretty dangerous stuff.  In fact, he looks to be pretty healthy and is in excellent spirits. I received an MTV Cribs-style tour of his lodgings, replete with a rowdy greeting from his...

But I’m headed to the hospital to visit (ANOTHER) friend who is in the ICU. I lack the words.

spoonfulofvigor: This is sort of old news to me as my old teaching notes indicate I lectured about this in the summer of 2009, but I think it’s VERY IMPORTANT news for everyone to read. Basically, the only ”empirical study” to link autism and vaccines was a big, BIG fraud. Wakefield (sorry, you don’t deserve the “Dr.” when you’ve caused the amount of detriment he’s caused) is a disgrace and...

Decision
I am grounded today.  I am not allowed to go further than a 2.5 block radius from my apartment (this ensures access to Starbucks) unless it’s for brunch at my favorite spot.  I am not allowed to run errands or leave the apartment with anything industrious in mind.

Bliss
My couch, a pumpkin spice latte, the heat on 72.  Feeling that amazing feeling you get after a cold walk and you walk into a warm room.  My feet up.  Knowing that I’m not accountable to anyone for another 2 days! So far, 2011 is off to a fantastic start.  As I said last night, suck it 2010!
